What is sinter plant?

A sinter plant is a facility used in the iron and steel industry to process fine iron ore and other materials into a sintered product called "sinter." Sintering is a thermal agglomeration process that involves heating a mixture of iron ore fines, fluxes (such as limestone or dolomite), and other additives to a high temperature in a continuous furnace.

During the sintering process, the iron ore fines are partially melted to form a cohesive mass, or sinter cake, which has improved physical and chemical properties compared to the raw materials. The sintered product has a higher strength, reduced porosity, and improved permeability, making it suitable for use in blast furnaces as a feed material for the production of iron and steel.

Sinter plants typically consist of several interconnected components, including sinter feed preparation systems, mixing and blending equipment, sintering furnaces, and gas cleaning systems. The process involves controlled heating, cooling, and airflow to ensure uniform sintering and minimize emissions of pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and particulate matter.
